South College JCR Membership 2026-2027
The Junior Common Room (JCR) is at the heart of student life at South College. Run by students, for students, the JCR represents the student body and aims to provide students with the best wider student experience possible. All money raised through the JCR Levy is invested back into the college, helping to subsidise events, provide new equipment and facilities, and support the sports, societies, and activities that make college life at South so great.
By purchasing the JCR levy, you become a member of South College JCR and can get involved in everything we have to offer. Members of the JCR can access subsidised tickets for events (including balls, Freshers’ Week, and formals), receive discounts on their gown, play in sports teams, join societies, and run for leadership positions within the college. For more information about what JCR Membership entails, take a look at https://southcollegejcr.com/jcr-levy-1.
JCR Membership is optional, but we strongly encourage all South students to join so that you can make the most of your time at Durham and have the opportunity to get involved in everything South has to offer. Many South students find that the JCR levy has effectively ‘paid for itself’ after a single year at South College. Please note that some sports clubs and events may have additional fees.
Membership Options
Undergraduate Students: JCR Membership is a one-off payment covering your entire undergraduate course at South. If you are on a four-year Integrated Masters course, you can select the four-year membership. Students undertaking a placement year or a year abroad can purchase the three-year membership.
Postgraduate Students: Postgraduate Membership should be purchased at the beginning of each year of your postgraduate course.
Exchange Students: If you are joining South on an exchange and require a one-year membership, please contact south.jcrpresident@durham.ac.uk to arrange this.
Financial Support
We understand that paying the JCR Levy upfront may not be possible for everyone. South College offers a range of bursaries and funding to help with these costs, including the JCR Levy Fund, which can directly cover the cost of JCR Membership for eligible students. For more information, please contact south.jcrpresident@durham.ac.uk.
