Workshop with Edinburgh University Press: Publishing in Academic Journals

calendar14:30 Monday, 22 July 2024 to 16:00 Monday, 22 July 2024
This event will take place on Monday 22nd July between 14:30 - 16:00pm in the Birley Room, Hatfield College, N Bailey, Durham DH1 3RQ.

This session will be run by Chris Grieves, Senior Journals Development Editor at Edinburgh University Press. It forms part of the broader programme for the conference Histories of Scottish Politics in the Age of Union (23-24 July), organised by Naomi Lloyd-Jones of the History Department and co-editor of the Scottish Historical Review.

Getting published can feel like an opaque, nebulous process. It often relies on prior knowledge of systems and processes, which can make things difficult for people at the beginning of their careers. Coupled with the fact that rejection is a very common occurrence for all authors, regardless of experience or stature, the whole thing can seem daunting to anyone – especially when you’re approaching it for the first time. Having a little bit of knowledge about what’s expected of you as an author – and what you can expect from journals – can go a really long way. In this workshop, we’ll provide that knowledge. We will demystify the publishing process by discussing how to structure an article, how to choose a journal, the basics of peer review, and more. There will also be a Q&A section to allow you to ask any specific publishing questions that you may have.
