The End of American Hegemony? The Trump Administration and the Future of American Power.

Join us for a discussion which promises to give important insights into a globally relevant topic led by our Chancellor, Dr Fiona Hill, at the Waterside Building in Durham.

Following two successful Chancellor-in-Conversation events, a third event with Dr Fiona Hill is taking place on Tuesday 10 June from 2.30pm - 4pm.

Dr Hill is an acclaimed foreign affairs specialist, author and former presidential advisor to George W Bush, Barack Obama and Donald Trump.

Speaker update

Dr Hill's main guest was scheduled to be pre-eminent economic and military historian Paul Kennedy CBE FBA. He is sadly, no longer able to attend due to ill health. He is disappointed not to be able to take part.

Paul’s contribution will remain evident during the event. We have worked closely with him to devise the panel. We hope you will join us in wishing him a speedy recovery.

Dr Hill will continue to lead the discussion with panellists from our expert academic members of staff. She will be joined by:

Professor Anoush Ehteshami, School of Government and International Affairs

Anoush is the Nasser al-Mohammad al-Sabah Chair in International Relations, Senior Fellow in our Global Policy Institute, and former Director of our Institute for Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies. He was the founding Head of our School of Government and International Affairs in 2004, becoming the first Dean of Internationalisation in 2009.

He has collaborated with many global institutions, including the German-based Bertelsmann Foundation, the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research, and the International Dialogues Foundation in The Hague.

Professor Barbara Keys, Department of History

As Professor of US History, Barbara’s career has taken her around the world. After receiving her PhD in History from Harvard University, she taught at the University of Melbourne, and has held the position of visiting fellow in several US and European institutions, most recently at Stanford University.  She specialises in personal diplomacy and international human rights and is currently finishing a book for publisher Simon & Schuster on Henry Kissinger’s reputation.

Barbara will serve as moderator for the event.

Working with Professor Janet Stewart, Executive Dean, Arts & Humanities, Lucian Hudson, Executive Director, Communications & External Relations, is supporting the event with his team and Event Durham.

An audience question and answer session will operate under Chatham House Rules. These state that participants can use information from the question and answer session, but are unable to reveal who said it or which organisation they are from. We encourage open discussion and free sharing of information.

In the event of oversubscription, priority will be given to academic staff and their students.
