Membership Subscription

For postgraduate students, MCR membership also automatically includes JCR membership, giving full access to both Common Rooms, their events, and their facilities.

What is the MCR?

The Middle Common Room (MCR) is the community of postgraduate, mature, and fourth-year undergraduate students at St Mary’s College. Entirely student-led, the MCR plays a central role in shaping the student experience at Mary’s — organising events, overseeing societies and sports, and providing social, academic, and welfare support.

What does MCR Membership mean?

Membership is open to all mature & postgraduate members of St Mary’s College. By opting in, you’ll join a vibrant and welcoming community while gaining access to a wide range of opportunities, events, and facilities.

Membership includes:

• Voting rights at JCR & MCR meetings and elections (non-members cannot vote).
• Eligibility to stand for JCR & MCR executive and non-executive roles (non-members cannot run or nominate).
• Access to over 50 College clubs and societies, including Mary’s sports teams (non-members cannot participate).
• Eligibility to attend JCR/MCR events such as formals and balls (non-members may only attend as a guest).

• Opportunity to attend formals, social dining events, and large-scale College events (e.g. Balls).
• Reduced ticket prices and priority booking for Balls and large events.
• Full access to JCR & MCR welfare services, supplies, and drop-ins.
• Eligibility to run for all MCR positions and voting rights in elections.
• Use of MCR Common Rooms (two spaces with TVs, pool table, air hockey, Wii U, Xbox 360, board games, and more).
• Exclusive access to the MCR kitchen & social room — not available to non-members.
• Opportunities to meet new people, expand your interests, and take part in inter-MCR events across Durham.

Membership Fee

At St Mary’s, our membership's are at a discounted rate for Postgraduates:

• 1-Year Membership (1 September 2025 – 31 August 2026): £38

This single fee grants you membership of both the Mary’s JCR and MCR, giving you the best of both undergraduate and postgraduate communities.
