Castle formals are an opportunity for the whole college community to dine together in the Great Hall. The Senior Common Room (SCR) members from the university and wider community sit on high table and are usually joined by the college principal or a senior college representative and any college guests. Before the SCR enter the hall, Junior Common Room (JCR, undergraduates) and Middle Common Room (MCR, postgraduates) are in their places in the hall. The dress code is smart attire with gowns which can be provided if you could advise us in advance and before dinner there is a Latin Grace said by members of the student community.
On Formal evenings, some of the College Staff and Senior Common Room members attend the 6pm Evensong Service in our own Tunstall Chapel and then join other staff and SCR members who have gathered from 6:30pm for pre-dinner drinks in the SCR. You would be welcome to join us for either: Evensong at 6pm or pre-dinner drinks from 6:30pm. If neither early arrival is convenient, please meet us in the Tunstall Gallery by 6:50pm in advance of our procession into the Hall at 7pm.
Formals are a longstanding college activity and a great opportunity to enjoy the historic surroundings and meet new friends and colleagues.
